Environmental Impact
Since 1963, Kenya's forest cover has decreased from 10% to less than 1.7%, demonstrating rapid and dangerously high levels of deforestation driven by the dependence and increased reliance on charcoal as an energy source. Through the simple solution of planting trees, KOMAZA eases market pressure on indigenous forests while improving the degraded land on which dry-land farmers depend.
We plant eucalyptus trees, which have been the subject of extensive environmental debate. Research has demonstrated that it is often bad forestry practice and poor planning that is the root cause of many environmental issues. For this reason, KOMAZA has taken steps to mitigate risks associated with planting eucalyptus. We selected a clonal hybrid of eucalyptus that is appropriate to arid and semi-arid environments. We have also created stringent planting methodologies to protect the surrounding environment and to restore farmers' barren land. KOMAZA takes environmental sustainability very seriously; we go beyond risk management to holistically protect and replenish the areas where we farm.
By 2020, we aim to have planted 50 million trees in semi-arid regions of East Africa, restoring degraded landscapes and creating widespread positive environmental impact.
